CONSIDERATION OF A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMISSION OF KNOX COUNTY, TENNESSEE, APPROVING AN AMENDMENT TO THE KNOX COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE EMPLOYEES’ MERIT SYSTEM RULES AND REGULATIONS, SUBSECTION 3.1.B.6 STRUCTURE AND QUALIFICATIONS TO PROVIDE FOR MEMBERS OF THE MERIT SYSTEM BOARD TO BE ELIGIBLE TO SERVE IF HE/SHE HAS NOT PREVIOUSLY BEEN EMPLOYED BY THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE WITHIN THE FIVE (5) YEARS INSTEAD OF TEN (10) YEARS PRECEDING HIS/HER APPOINTMENT AND TO REMOVE THE REQUIREMENT THAT A PERSON IS NOT ELIGIBLE TO SERVE ON THE MERIT SYSTEM BOARD IF ANY MEMBER OF THE PERSON’S FAMILY IS OR BECOMES EMPLOYED BY THE KNOXVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT
Substitute motion to approve Resolution R-25-9-905 - Resolution of the Commission of Knox County, Tennessee, approving an amendment to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office Employees’ Merit System Rules and Regulations, Subsection 3.1.b.6 Structure and Qualifications to provide for members of the Merit System Board to be eligible to serve if he/she has not previously been employed by the Sheriff’s Office within the five (5) years instead of ten (10) years preceding his/her appointment and to remove the requirement that a person is not eligible to serve on the Merit System Board if any member of the person’s family is or becomes employed by the Knoxville Police Department with the amendment to take effect January 1, 2027; and the additional amendment to delete the language that reads “five (5) years” and replace with eight (8) years.

Defer to the November 2025 meeting the Ordinance of the Commission of Knox County, Tennessee, amending the Knox County Code, Chapter 42, Article II, Division 2, Section 42-53, “Merit System Board of Directors”, to revise in Subsection (C) the qualifications for members of the Merit System Board to be eligible to serve if he/she has not previously been employed by the Sheriff’s Office within the five (5) years instead of ten (10) years preceding his/her appointment and to remove any member of the person’s family is or becomes employed by the Knoxville Police Department (amending Ordinance O-90-9-111, adopted September 10, 1990; Ordinance O-91-8-114, adopted November 25, 1991; Ordinance O-95-4-101, adopted April 24, 1995; Ordinance O-19-1-101, adopted February 25, 2019; and Ordinance O-22-6-103, adopted July 25, 2022.
